Carmelitas Teresas de San José” arrived in Puerto Rico on September 10, 1979.They began to carry out their mission in education and pastoral care by responding to the human and spiritual needs of the communities of the eastern area of Puerto Rico.
They were the beginnings of great dedication in pastoral work in the community of Fajardo collaborating and organizing the catechesis, accompanying in the celebrations of the different communities and providing faith education as teachers at Colegio Santiago Apóstol school. Ten years full of efforts, like all fields of work with their lights and shadows, joys and sufferings, but with the hope that the congregation would be present in Puerto Rico.
On July of 1989 the General Government of Common agreement with the government of the Delegation of Santo Domingo decided to withdraw the community of Fajardo, closing the Mission that the Congregation carried out in the Parish of Santiago Apóstol, and moved to the community of Loíza thus continuing our desire to remain in these “borinqueña” lands in order to continue extending and consolidating the Reign of God.
The work of Hogares Teresa Toda began on March 19, 1993, with the intention of helping to improve the standard of living in Loíza and, especially, girls who suffered some form of orphanhood. A start of a new Foster Homes at the service of a people that we wish would be each and every day, more human and joyful, that can experience the love of God that continues to encourage us to live as His own brothers and children.
The original residence accommodates up to 14 residents. As part of a growth and training project in 2002, the construction of new facilities begins, including houses with two identical bedroom units with 14 private rooms in each unit. The first one for young people between 13 and 17 years old and the second one serves to welcome young people of 18 years and older in a plane of independent life.
